Once again our Carson-Tahoe Sectional is over and was successful! I would like to thank all of our Unit 645 players, as well as the players from the Reno Bridge Club, for their support and help during the tournament and give special thanks to everyone who provided goodies for our “famous” hospitality table organized by Gladys; also to Nick Pchelkin for dealing all the boards, Carole Sill for running the partnership desk, and John Sill for taking care of the finances. As usual, Kristy Schindler and staff at the Plaza took very good care of us.
While our attendance was down by 20 tables again this year (primarily due to the low number of out-of-town players because of the upcoming Regional in Reno next week), we managed to eke out a small profit of about $500 (down from $1,000-$2,000 in previous years). We are looking at other options in scheduling future sectionals to try to mitigate the effects of the October Reno Regional (which isn’t going away) on our attendance.
We still have a few Unit 465 events before the end of the year:
1. The Unit NAP Qualifier on Saturday, November 3, at 12:00 noon at the Carson Senior Center—you must have qualified in a club game and you must be a paid-up ACBL member to play;
2. Unit game on Saturday, November 17, at 12:00 noon at the Carson Senior Center;
3. Unit game, Saturday, December 8, at 12:00 noon; 11;15 am Annual Membership Meeting; Christmas Dinner Party at Julio’s Restaurant, 4:00-6:00 pm following the game—more details to follow.
The election for the Unit Board of Directors will be held from November 15 and December 1. Ballots may be cast in person at any club or Unit game or by email—details to follow. There are four positions “up for grabs” this year; there are six candidates running: Roxanne Hart, Gary Nitzberg, Theresa Pinney (incumbent), Brenda Pugsley, Mike Regan, and Ruth Rouse (incumbent). Results of the election will be announced at the Annual Membership Meeting on December 8. Leona and Marie are not running for re-election. Board members remaining for the second year of their current terms are: Ed Gould, John Sill, and Beverly Meyer.
For the past few months, the Board has been working on revising the Unit’s Bylaws. All Unit members will receive an email or paper copy at least 10 days before the Annual Membership Meeting, and they will be voted on for adoption by the members present at the meeting. Hopefully, you will take the time to review them before the meeting.
A new Membership Directory is in process and should be available to players in November or December.
This is a very long newsletter—so additional details will be provided in subsequent letters, as necessary.
Happy bridge playing!!!
P.S.: Remember--there are no bridge games in Gardnerville or Carson City on October 15 and 17, due to the Regional.
