Unit Game and Board Meeting
Friday, August 31, 2018 09:15
The Unit game will be held Saturday, September 15, at 12:00 noon at DCC&SC. There will be a Board meeting at 11:00 am. As usual, we appreciate your contributions to the refreshment table.
As you know, our Carson-Tahoe Sectional at the Plaza is coming up from October 4-7. On Thursday, the pairs games will start at 12:00 noon, followed by a no-host reception (about 3:30 pm) with snacks, and 8-is-Enough—Swiss teams at 5:30—so get your teams together! You can pick up a flyer at the clubs or go to the ACBL tournament website for a full schedule. A limited supply of lunch tickets will be available for sale for the play-though Swiss team game on Sunday.
As usual, Gladys Turissini will be organizing our famous (and fabulous) hospitality table for the tournament. She will be asking for sign-ups the event. Contributions may be homemade or store-bought, non-sticky, finger foods (no plates or utensils; no sandwiches, per the Plaza) and should be ready to to serve. Besides baked goods, cut-up fruits and vegetables and candy are always popular. If you would like to contribute without shopping or baking, cash contributions are also welcome.
While we do have several candidates to run for the Board, we could use one or two more nominees. Please let the nominating committee know by November 1st if you are interested. I know many people are concerned about to amount of time involved or “we’re out of town a lot” (aren’t we all??), but here is the reality: Meetings usually last 30-45 minutes; total time commitment is usually no more than an hour or two per month (that’s less than one bridge game!) for most Board members. Typically, the board meets 6-8 times per year (a minimum of four meetings annually, per the Bylaws), usually before the Unit Game. Meeting participation may even be by done by Face Time or other electronic means, if necessary. At the present time, it is anticipated that there is no need for meetings in January and February and possibly other months (as determined by the Board). Usually, there are meetings in March, May, June (annual BBQ), August, September (before the Sectional), October/November (one meeting), and December (Annual Membership Meeting and election of officers for coming year by the Board).
Our summer visitors are starting to bid us farewell until next year, but we look forward to their return. Sadly, after more than 20 years, Gerry and Anita Hoffer will not be coming back next year because they are selling their home—they will be missed! John Guerry, former manager of the Bridge-by-the-Lake club, has had another stroke and is recovering in SoCal. We wish everyone the best.
Thanks to Gary Nitzberg, Thelma Nelson, our own “grande dame” of bridge (who will be 102 on October 25th), was interviewed by the Nevada Appeal. Watch for the article--it should be fun and interesting read. Our local bridge clubs should also be getting some good publicity.
Congratulations to our players who placed in the recent Western Conference STAC games at the clubs! A complete list is on ACBL’s Tournament website for STAC tournaments. We also had a number of players who did well at the Reno Sectional—congrats, as well. Carole Sill will be including them in her article to Diamond in the Ruff, District 21’s on-line publication.
Don’t forget to visit our website at www.carsontahoeunit465.org for info about our unit.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the games.
