Unit Game and Board Meeting, Saturday March 17

Monday, March 12, 2018 21:17

The Unit game for March will be held this Saturday, the 17th (St. Pat’s Day), at 12:00 noon at DCC&SC (Board meeting at 11:00 am). Certificates for ACBL awards will be given out before the game (a complete list will be posted on our website www.carsontahoeunit465.org ). Come and be recognized for your achievements!  Also, please feel free to bring a snack to share (something other than cookies would be nice, as we already have lots of them on hand).

Congratulations to Brenda Pugsley for making Gold Life Master (2500 points)!  Here’s wishing Gary Nitzberg and others getting over seasonal afflictions speedy recoveries.

Food for Thought (or points I consider germane to our local games):

I hope that you will all take some time to read at least some of the articles your ACBL Bridge Bulletin magazine.  Two articles/columns in this month’s issue I think are very informational are “Ruling the Game” (pg. 33) and “For the Record” (pg. 32).

The former talks about the announcement of the point range for opening 1 NT that remains in effect (note that the range of a 1 NT overcall is never announced—just as other overcall point ranges are never announced).  Also, cards must be played (faced) from one’s hand or dummy so all players including the dummy can see them—it is best to place them flat on the table rather than holding them vertically.

The latter covers the principle of full disclosure, conventions, playing friendly, and tempo and pace of play. If you are the last to finish nearly every round and/or players are always waiting to come to your table, you are probably playing too slowly; also, if you are behind, you should not further slow the game by getting refreshments, for example.

Well, I’ll get off my soap box now.

See you at the game on Saturday.
